"Once" is their most interesting album for me. Try the song "Ghost Love Score", fantastic song with great orchestra stuff.

Their masterpiece is still "Oceanborn" for me...

If you like opera-like vocals ;)
But all of the albums have their something special: if you can have a look at their DVD "From Wishes To Eternity --Live", that can be a very good start :)
Maybe it's better for you, mankind, not to know what's going on!

Nightwish is a fantastic band. Its speciality is its opera-singer. I havent listened to all the albums, but songs I would recommend are 'Sleeping Sun' (opera at its best!), 'Sacrement of wilderness', and 'Tenth Man Down'. The last two are the typical and peculiar nightwish songs.
Also try to get song 'Forever yours'. Its more like a pop song, but its a damn-cool love song.

and if you have the chance, try to watch "Wish I had an angel" video clip... featuring the "Alone In The Dark movie trailer"...sounds like Nightwish's "Wish I Aad an Angel" will be on a movie soundtrack... :D

well at least that's what I saw on the Nightwish discussion boards.....

The new album "once" is easily their best yet! Especially "dark chest of wonders" and "wish I had an angel"! They like totally kicks ass!

@Mexus
It doesn't matter which one CD you choose - they're all good in their own way...

If you're planning to see them live soon, I suggest you start from the most recent and work your way back...that way you'll know the material they're likely to be performing now...

Some fans don't like Marco's singing participation in the band since Century Child... I do.. I love the contrast between Marco's and Tarja's voice.

Don't forget the 2 DVDs as well.

Century Child is my favorite.

The other albums are great, but Century Child has a certain feeling (mood you might say) in it that I don't think Tuomas might ever acheive again in writing. He was depressed when he wrote the album, and it really comes out.

First 5 songs on that album = one of the strong 20-30 minutes of music ever in my opinion. Bless my Child, End of all Hope, Dead to the World, Everdream, Slaying the Dreamer. Just has everything, emotion, metal, melodies....

Once was good! But I think Tuomas was more experimenting with different things as the album doesn't flow as well IMO. Idea's scattered around.

Still a great buy!

If you're more into guitar driven power metal: Century Child and Once

If you're more into the keyboard style and speed: Oceanborn and Wishmaster (Though I feel Wishmaster offers nothing new if you've heard Oceanborn. To me it's just Oceanborn Pt 2)
