Hi everyone!

Long story short, I need rock and metal ballads. Lots of them, especially melodic and sweet ones. Think about Through Her Eyes by Dream Theater, I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing by Aerosmith, or Always Will Be by Hammerfall.

So... can you help me by listing your favourite ballads? Maybe I know half of them already, but if I don't, I'll give them a shot for sure. Obviously don't bother with Edguy and Avantasia songs because I know them all very well. :D

Thank you in advance!

Hi Poglia,

I have two old ones for you:

1) In The Middle Of A Heartbeat - Helloween - Master of the Rings

2) Carved In Stone - Pink Cream 69 - Thunderdome (Jap. Bonus Track)

Will try to come up with more :) .
Speramus Meliora; Resurget Cineribus

Life was easier when apples and blackberries were just fruit ...

X-Japan - Endless Rain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztvMwmPaByg

I could write all about the history of the band and what happened to explain why they're crying, but that would just make me cry myself. They literally have the saddest history of any band ever. Enjoy the song, it's beautiful either way :)

Be sure to read the comments after listening to it and post what you think here. I got into them this year and instantly fell in love. The only band to do so after and along with Avantasia.

X-Japan! Hell yeah! 8) I know them very well. The first song I've heard from them was Art Of Life back in 2009 or 2010... a true masterpiece! :) And Yoshiki is probably one of the most talented musicians in the world. His piano and drums skills are absolutely insane! :eek

About Endless Rain, it's a very good song, although the piano part is a bit cheesy. Do you happen to know the band Savatage? I think they totally copied the intro of Endless Rain and used it on their song All That I Bleed. Check it out if you don't know it already.

Anyway, thanks for your post, bro!

Ah, I'm so glad that someone else knows of X-Japan! Yes, Yoshiki truly is something and I think that collab between Tobi and him would be otherwordly. He is much better piano player than a drummer (nothing technical, mostly double bass), but I'm totally blown away by his enthusiasm, emotion, and headbanging, that's why I love him so much. He really puts his everything into it. In my opinion Tobi's and Yoshiki's composing skills are on the same level (they both write both music and the lyrics), but Tobi maybe slightly surpasses him because he writes the melodies while having a certain singer in mind to fit his voice and style perfectly. Plus they're both multi-instrumental. I'm so glad people like that exist and grace us with their music. Another thing to note is that they've both been told that they can't combine metal with ballads, yet that's what led them to success. :hug

My favorite piano performance of his is probably "Forever Love" from "The Last Live" when he breaks down on piano, and as for drum performance it must be Dahlia (you can see he's trying to hold back his tears when Toshi is behind him, starts headbanging as if to remove those thoughts of him leaving, then completely smashes the drumset). That totally blew me away and I'm so happy they're happy once again in 2015 performances. I wish I could see them in 2016 in London, that event is going to be historical. Hide's loss is tragic though.

Had no idea about the band, but yep, that's a total ripoff. Grrr! :x

Yeah, Yoshiki is an amazing composer and songwriter, just like Tobi. Another great one is Jon Oliva, from the band Savatage that I mentioned earlier. I'm pretty sure you've heard him singing before, because he's the guest on Death Is Just A Feeling. :D But please do check out some Savatage material. Songs like Believe and Alone You Breathe are true masterpieces, not only for the music but also for the lyrics.

About Yoshiki's skills with instruments, yeah, he's probably better at piano (his fingers really fly!) than drums, but he's still an amazing drummer. I think he's just as good as Felix, if not slightly better, and Felix is a monster already. You are probably aware that Yoshiki puts so much energy when playing, that he sometimes passes out on stage.

And yeah, Hide's loss is indeed tragic. I don't think he was an exceptional guitarist (nothing special, actually), but he meant so much for the band. It also reminds me of Savatage because their guitarist, who was Jon Oliva's brother, died in his 30s.

Yup, of course I remember him, he was perfect for that song! :)

Thank you for the recommendation, I'll check it out immediately.

Yup, they are both monsters in their respective fields (power metal and being able to gallop for long periods of time), but they're not that technically advanced. An example of technical drummer would be Matt Gartska - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bRQOgRY5Bk

Poglia wrote:You are probably aware that Yoshiki puts so much energy when playing, that he sometimes passes out on stage.

Yup, that's the result of his neck and back surgeries due to extreme headbanging and smashing. He's even not supposed to be playing nowadays (he's also not supposed to lift anything heavier than 1.5 kg, and doesn't feel fingers in his hands), but despite all that he continues to play. That's one hell of a spirit and one of the reasons why I love him so much.

I loved him because he wasn't as expressionless as Pata and actually had fun on stage. When they all changed back to "normal" appearances, he continued to be himself. The thing that saddens me the most is the fact that he died without the knowledge that Toshi was brainwashed into leaving the band, he died thinking that he left for his own selfish reasons.

Damn, I really wrote too much. Hope it's not a problem and sorry if I went off topic!! I'll post some more ballads as I remember them (the problem is my favorite ballads are almost all coming from Tobi and you already know of Aerosmith)
